8 February 1899 — Rome
Wednesday. 8th [February 1899]. Lady Louisa all right again & went out. I walked out at 10.30 to change a cheque & to write my name at the Lavaggi house & then came back to the hotel to lock up my money. Lady Hilda Keppel called just as I came in to say the manager of the Hotel Beausite offered me rooms there & they want me to go from this hotel there. I went out with Hilda in her open batte & she left me in Via Venti Settembre at Mme Castellani’s where I went to lunch at 1. I met there Miss Harry Hertz & M. & Mme Foxiera– He is Dutch Consul & she half Italian half Belgian. His father was consul at Venice when first I lived there. After an excellent repast with even too much to eat I walked to the Beausite Hotel & met Hilda Keppel coming back from her luncheon at Pal. Barberini. I looked at the rooms at the Beausite & declined them as they were scattered & small. I went for a drive with Lady Vivian to the English cemetery & then we came back to Miss Wilson’s tea room & had tea there—& I came back to my hotel– Dined in restaurant room with Mme de Bülow & Lady L. Legge & the latter came to my sitting room in evening & I taught her to play patience.
