9 February 1899 — Rome | |
Thursday. 9th February [1899]. I wrote letters the whole morning till it was time to go off to lunch at the Beausite with Lady Ampthill & her son the guardsman & her daughter Romola– I saw there the Vivians & we had a great bargaining with a man selling stuff & I helped Emily Ampthill to buy some embroidery. I then took a walk with Hilda Keppel. We called on Lady Bonham at Pal. Borghese which looked very different to what it did when Lady Vivian was in the apartment. Hilda left me & I returned to rest but was stirred up by a telephonic message from Pal. Consulta where I was expected to tea & had forgotten it. Mme de Bülow, the Trauttenbergs & Princess Odescalchi were there. Ersilia Canevaro sang to Mme Trauttenberg’s accompaniment. She was in good voice, Mme T. was not very successful as an accompanyist tho’ she plays well & improvised on the air Ersilia had sung. It is curious, how with all her talent Mme T. has an aggravating pretentious vain manner over it all! I stayed a long time talking & Css Morosini came in for a few moments with Ct Grimani the Sindaco of Venice. Css Morosini had come from Venice to be with a great friend Donna Giulia Lavaggi. I walked back to Hotel d’Angleterre in time for 7.30 dinner with Lady Louisa Legge & we played patience together. My man servant Byford is ill in bed today. | |
