12 February 1899 — Rome | |
Sunday. 12th [February 1899]. I went to morning service in Via Babuino in a cab with Lady Louisa Legge & then we parted. I walked to the Pal. Barberini at 1.30 to lunch with the Spanish Ambr Del Mazo a great spread of 24 people. There were all the minor Diplomats—Ministers of Argentina, Switzerland &c. I sat on Mazos left. We had a regular kind of dinner wh lasted nearly 2 hours & we had all kinds of Spanish sweets such as marzapan de Toledo, Turron de Jijona &c. Del Mazo was very affectionate & attentive to me & all were very civil. There was a general light up of cigars afterwards but at 3.30 I had to leave & hurry back to the hotel to receive the people I had invited to tea. I had managed to hide my bed &c & to open my bed room to have more room & then the tea was prepared & the Vivian girls came & helped me to pour it out. Donna Laura Minghetti came first & Lady Susan Townley & her sisters—then the Poet Laureate & Mrs Austin, Mr Hamilton Aidé, Mme Galetti née Collier (who wrote My Home on the Adriatic) & her son & daughter who draws very well—Donna Laura Gropallo & an Italian writer, Baron & Bss Frantlenberg & Idita Bentivoglio—Count Brandolin, Baroness de Bulow, Lady Louisa Legge—Lady Hilda Keppel & Doris Vivian remained to the last & as I was going to dine with Mme Hurtado I took them back to the Beausite Hotel when I went to the Villino Buoncompagni– Mr Hurtado was not very well & did not appear so I dined with Mme Hurtado & the Bentivoglios & we played patience afterwards. | |
