11 February 1899 — Rome
Saturday. 11th February [1899]. I walked to the Piazza Paganica by 2.30 & lunched with Donna Laura Minghetti quite alone a most delightful time together. She afterwards showed me all her apartment & asked my advice as to whether she should move into another more roomy house. I am decidedly against her moving. She has a splendid drawing room & all her pretty things arranged with such taste & there she has memories of her husband & of happier days & I think she is now too old to move—not in age—but to recommence life with the elasticity required. She took me out for a drive in a closed carriage for it was cool & what is rare for Rome—foggy– We drove round the Borghese grounds & went in to see the pictures in the Villa but it was so cold there that we did not stay long– I had with me the Murray’s guide to read Henry’s & Morelli’s remarks on the pictures—for Henry did for Murray the remarks on the pictures in the galleries in Rome. Donna Laura left me at the Hotel abt 6 & I meant to have remained quiet for the rest of the day but found a card from Lady Vivian asking me to go & dine with her at the Beausite which I did. She was going out in the evening & I came back in her carriage.
