14 February 1899 — Rome
Tuesday. 14th [February 1899]. Shrove Tuesday. Was tired & got up late. Wrote letters in bed. Lunched alone in restaurant. At 3.15 Ersilia Canevaro & Maria Cozzi fetched me & took me to see some amateur theatricals in the Palazzo Aldems given for a Charity. All the smart people of Rome were there & it was tremendously crowded. We had good seats as the play did not begin till 4. The first piece Le Donne che piangono was well given. After it Novelli recited a Monologue very cleverly & it was very amusing. I appreciated his talent better than hers. I had heard him in Marchesa Rudini’s salon a short time since. The last piece was not so good. Princess Corsini who was supposed to be the attraction acted abominably & did not look pretty—the style of costume (beginning of this century) not being at all becoming to her. Donna Clarice Frascara was first rate & carried the thing thro’. The whole entertainment was far too long—& I only got back to my hotel at 7—in time for 7.30 dinner with Mme de Bülow & Lady Louisa. The theatre was chock full & all the smart ladies both white & black were there. Lady Louisa Legge came to play patience in my room in the evening.
