15 February 1899 — Rome
Wednesday. 15th [February 1899]. Ash Wednesday. I went off to church at 10 by mistake, the service not being till 11– So I bought some plastelina or clay prepared with oil to try to model with– I went back at 11 to church & sat next the Vivians & they took me to the Beausite to lunch with them– At 2 I went to see Mme Hurtado & condoled with her on her little granddaughter being laid up with measles & then I came back to the hotel to try my new clay. After working very unsuccessfully for some time & getting my hands unpleasantly stained red I gave it up. Had a visit from Sir John Conway of Oxford who is in Rome for the winter being delicate. Also from Mr Stephen Leech one of our Embassy secretaries who seems an intelligent young man caring for books & for flowers. At 6 I walked to Pal: Castani to see the Dss of Sermoneta & to find out if she was going to take me to Fogliano. It appears she is not going there till next month when I hope to be at Venice—so it must be a pleasure deferred. I went on to see Donna Laura Minghetti & met there an old gentleman I had seen there before. Between them they made my hair stand on end by stories they knew of for facts, of people who had been buried alive of late years in Italy—having been supposed to be dead– It is a good thing to think cremation may save me from such a fate. I got back to the hotel at 7.30 & found Lady Louisa & Mme de Bülow were at dinner to hurried to join them. Lady L came to my room to play patience in the evening.
