16 February 1899 — Rome
Thursday. 16th [February 1899]. Wrote all the morning—returned to writing of my childish reminiscences till I grew quite melancholy & had to put it away. Lunched at 1 with Lady Louisa Legge. Afterwards had a long visit from Count de Basterot. At 4 I took a batte & went off to Porta Solario to see Mme Galletti on her day & saw her girl’s paintings of animals which are very clever. Met there Mme Pantaleoni whose husband was a Patriot in the days before the liberation of Italy & had suffered. She has grown stately with age & seems very nice. She promised to come & see me. I walked after I left Mme Galletti who seemed more depressed & miserable than ever, to the Via 4 Fontane—left cards on Pss Aristarchi whom I had not seen for many years, down Via Nazionale—met Marchesa Giuccioli mère walking & had a little talk to her. Then by the Corso to Hotel de Rome. The Queen passed driving in a high open carriage with her red liveried servants wh looked very smart. She saw & recognised me. I came indoors at 6 & sat reading & studying French. Dined at 7.30 with Mme de Bülow & then in my own room played patience & did French exercises till bed time.
