20 February 1899 — Rome | |
Monday. 20th [February 1899]. Woke rather tired & headachy. At 12 went out walking—to Messrs Cooks to find out abt trains to Venice as I am returning there next week. On to Beausite & lunched with the Vivians. At 3 to Mme de Hurtado & took a drive with her. She took me by Porta Salaria to see the Aqua acetosa & then to the Pinchio. We saw there Adeline Patti the bride of Baron Cederstrom the Swede driving. She was very grandly got up in a bright pink bonnet & a pink parasol. Then to Mme Westenberg’s where Mme Hurtado left me. There were only a few ladies there. I stayed only a few minutes & then walked back to the hotel. Had a visit from Countess Ethel Bosdari née Hanson of Consple. She gave a bad account of her mother Mrs Arthur Hanson who has fallen into the hands of Christian Scientists who have separated her from her family & pretend to heal her of a tumour which is killing her by inches. It is a very sad thing. I rested for ½ hour in the dark & then went to dine at Lady Bonham’s– The Vivians dining there also took me in their carriage. Had next me Sir George Bonham (very dull) & Mr Leech very pleasant. The rest were all young people & Monsigr Way. Back early & glad to get to bed. | |
