23 February 1899 — Rome
Thursday. 23rd [February 1899]. I went to walk on the Pincio abt 12 & met there Lady Vivian & her little girl with the dogs– We sat & talked there. It was heavenly weather—tramontana wind & hot sun so we were glad of the shade. Louie sent the child & dogs back to their hotel in a cab & she returned to H. Angleterre to lunch with me– Mr Bliss paid us a visit after lunch in my room– Louie left at 3. At 3.30 I went to Austrian Embassy Pal. Chigi & paid a visit to Mme Pasetti. Thence I walked to Via Goito where the Keppels have taken an apartment & where they had a small tea party. Lady Currie, Monsigr Ely was there & the Alfred Austins &c. Princess (Jane) San Faustino was introduced to me & amazed me by the frank way in which she recounted a huge piece of impertinence of which she was guilty towards me. She says she got into my house at Venice (she did not quite explain how) & admiring some old chairs in my house, she had gone back with old Carrer the antiquary & got him to take the measures & to copy them. I restrained every expression of astonishment & annoyance but I felt furious & was only consoled by her adding that Carrer had so ornamented the legs of the chairs he had made that they were quite spoilt & not like the originals– The Princess Jane is an American & I suppose that may account for her want of breeding in this matter. I walked on from the Keppels to see Mme Hurtado & after spending a short time with her I walked on to the Hotel. Count de Basterot dined with me at 8 in the Restaurant room & he sat talking to me in my sitting room till just 11 o’cl. He was very interesting & pleasant.
