24 February 1899 — Rome
Friday. 24th February [1899]. I walked up to the Beausite by 1 o’cl & lunched with the Vivians & afterwards walked to the Consulta to see Ersilia. Close there I met her driving & I got into the carriage & accompanied her until she went to a Charity Concert where Adeline Patti was to sing. She sent me on in her carriage to Via Nazionale where I paid a visit to Marchesa (Madre) Guiccioli. I then walked back to the Hotel & sat quiet till dinner time. I had a visit from Señorita Ochoa—who is staying in this hotel & whom I had known when we were at Madrid—a slim girl & now developed into a very fat middle aged person. She told me about people I had known there– How the Dss de la Torre has settled down into a quiet old age– Lives at Biarritz & devotes herself to good works. How Isabelita Madrazo, Mlle Ochoa’s cousin, who used then to be called “Isabela la Loco” is shut up in a mad house at Caravanchel. Senorita Ochoa is here to take care of her young nephew “Coco Madrazo” who is an artist & from appearances seems to be somewhat queer. He is studying here. I went to dine with Lady Susan Townley & her sisters in their apartment 2 Via Goito. We were alone. I taught them to make Venetian coffee & gave them a “cocoma.” Home at 10.30 to bed.
