26 February 1899 — Rome | |
Sunday. 26th February [1899]. I went to morng service Via Babuino. Brought Doris Vivian back to lunch with me—& we sat & talked till abt 4 when my visitors began to arrive. I began with Dss Sermoneta, Mrs Curtis, Lord de Manley, then Gallettis, Vivians, Austins, the Spanish Ambr, Mme Canevaro, Donna Laura Gropallo, Countess Pasolini, Lady L. Legge, the Dean of Lichfield, Marchesa Ristori del Grillo & Da Bianca, Lady Bonham. They continued to come in & out till past 6. I recd a telegram from Fannie Browning saying she closes all negociations with her husband. I am greatly disappointed– I am afraid I have managed it all very stupidly– I took Mme de Bülow to dine at the Portuguese Emby to the Popes my old friends the d’Antas. Met there, M. & Mme de Florian who used to be in the French Emby in London– Css de S. Roman & her daughter (mother U.S. Slidell), Baron de Cetto whose father was so many years Bavarian Minister in London. The new German Minister. M. d’Antas took me to dinner & I had on my right Senor [illegible word] a Spanish secy. I talked much about Madrid to him & of all the people I had known there. He told me that many were dead & the rest old– The the Dss de la Torre is retired to Biarritz & s’est donné à la réligion—is making her soul in fact– I told him how we had helped Serrano to escape to Santander of which of course he was too young to have heard! After dinner Mlle S. Roman came & sat by me & at once engaged in a discussion about the question of the Crisis in our church! As she is a R.C. it was funny. She knew the Wimbornes & spoke of my nephew as “Ivor Guest”– At 10.30 I deposited Mme de Bülow at our hotel & went on to the Dutch Legation. There was a party to celebrate the Westenberg’s silver wedding & there were many people. Heaps of flowers & many small presents. | |
