28 February 1899 — Rome
Tuesday. 28th [February 1899]. Packed in the morning. Lady Louisa Legge came to my sitting room & brought her work & sat with me. She is in despair at my departure. I have cheered up the poor little lady. Mme de Bülow came to pay me a farewell visit. At 12 I went on foot to Via Ripetta to buy a little souvenir for old Mme de Bulow & then went up to Hotel Beausite to lunch with the Vivians & met Lord de Manley at lunch. After lunch I drove with Lady Vivian & Violet & we returned to Hotel d’Angleterre & picked up Mme de Bülow & then went to Palazzo della Consulta to a small afternoon party given by the Canevaros to hear Braga play & Ersilia Canevaro sing the famous “Serenade” together. There were abt 30 people & all were delighted. Braga was very pleased & was very pleasant to me & friendly. The Bentivoglios were there so I took leave of Louie Vivian & remained with Idita Bent: Abt 6 I took leave of the Canevaros—thanking Ersilia warmly for all her kindness to me since my stay in Rome—& went with Idita to Via Goito 2 to say good bye to Lady Susan Townley & the Keppels—Susan & Florence were in– On getting to the Villino Buoncompagni we found Lady Hilda there & she remained & dined as also I did. After dinner played patience with Mme Hurtado. At 10.30 she sent me to the station & I took leave of her with many thanks for her kindness. Marchese Bentivoglio was at the station to see me off by 11.10 train. My 2 servants met me. I had a place in the sleeping car & had a very comfortable journey via Florence to Rovigo.
