15 April 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 15th [April 1899]. I went with the Vivian family to the Piazza in the morning. It looked threatening & began to rain before we got home to lunch. But as the day went on the rain increased till abt 5 it became a perfect deluge. I took Lady V. round a good many antiquity shops—& she bought various things. We finished up by going to tea with the Curtis to meet the Empress & her suite. Mme Wiel was there & Henry James the author (U.S.). Got home abt 7 after having gone to the Montalbas to ask Clara if H.M. could see her pictures. Dressed & went off to Hotel Britannia to dine with the Empress. The Vivians went to the premierè of the Fenice & the Empress’ 2 ladies & Herr Wedel also went. I remained with H.M. & Count Seckendorff. D. Agostini came for an hour & we sat & talked. H.M. retired at 10 & I came home to bed—quite tired out.
