21 June 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 21st June [1899]. I went to dine with Mr & Mrs Leckie & there met Css Casa Valencia ex Spanish Ambassadress here. I had known her before she married when we were at Madrid. She had a girl tonight with her. The Countess is the daughter of a rich man a banker not very refined people but good natured. She speaks English perfectly & is remaining on in England for the education of her sons. A sister of hers is the widow of Canovas del Castillo the Prime Minister who was assassinated not many years ago & whom we also knew very well. She was cordial & pleasant to me. There are stories about of her having seized & sold the furniture of the Sp. Embassy here when her husband left it. I also met the Netherlands Minister who said he is related to Lord Reay. A French secretary completed the party. Kate & Nellie dined at home.
