22 June 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 22nd [June 1899]. I went to see Dr Madagan in the morning to consult him about my health as I suffer so much from cholics. He said he would come to see me tomorrow. I drove to his house in Cadogan Place & then took Nellie on to shop & we returned to lunch at 1.30. At 4 Kate & I went to Spencer House to see Mr Newman’s collection of drawings the Spencers having lent them their house for the occasion. He is a clever artist but wanting in power & aerial perspective. His details are no minute that one can read every letter of the Arabic & Coptic inscriptions in his Egyptian drawings & count every flower in his Japanese ones. I had a dinner party to which came Dr Palmer & Mme Nevada Palmer, Mr John Murray, Mrs Lecky, Arthur Du Cane, Fred & Francie Thesiger. In the evening I had some music & got Pablo Casals to play the violincello & a Mr Worthington to sing. Mme Nevada very kindly offered to sing & enchanted every one with her beautiful clear birdlike voice. I asked about 50 people to come & all enjoyed themselves. Mme Nevada ended by singing most beautifully to her own accompaniment on the piano “Listen to the mocking bird”– The entertainment was all over by 12– Refreshments were served in the dining room. Casals playing on the cello was immensely admired & he certainly is a wonderful player & musician & most simple & unaffected in manner. He is sure to make his way. He is now only 22 years old & quite youthful almost childish. As this is my first attempt at an evening party since I have been alone—I can hardly believe it should have succeeded but am glad I made the effort as it gave many people pleasure & will be a help to young Casals. Nellie Alderson was of the greatest help to me on the occasion & took no end of trouble. Old Jane cooked an excellent dinner.
