23 June 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 23rd [June 1899]. Kate & I breakfasted in bed—got up late & then walked up to Cav. Sqr for Kate to bid Blanche goodbye. She was not at home so we walked home. Blanche looked in to see Kate for a moment before luncheon. Mrs Arthur Layard came to luncheon. Kate left directly after & returned to Peterborough. Mrs Arthur poured into my ear long stories of a quarrel with her mother in law who writes long insulting letters. She said she wanted my advice. I told her to burn the letters without reading them & advised her to try & keep the peace. After lunch I took her out with me—& went to see Lady Vivian myself & sent her home. I found the Vivian family all sixes & sevens & I spent a couple of hours getting Doris & her mother reconciled. I persuaded her mother Doris’ health was the cause of all & begged her to take her to Dr Madagan & promised to explain all to him & appoint a time tomorrow for him to see Doris. Then home to tea & Dr Madagan came at 5.30 & prescribed for what he says is catarrh d’stomac. Had a long visit from Sir Alfred Burton who is older & more feeble—but always affectionate & kind. Dined at home & went early to bed.
