24 June 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 24th [June 1899]. After lunch I drove to the Vivians & found all settled down. Doris happy again & good. Promised her some books to read. Went to Charing Cross & took the 4.38 train to Ashford to pay a visit to the Poet Laureate & Mrs Austin at Swinford Old Manor. Sir Alfred Austin [sic, for Lyall] went down with me. We reached Ashford soon after 6. The Austin brougham met us & we had a lovely 2 mile drive through a beautiful park on the edge of which stands the little old dower house in which the Austin’s live. It was originally a 2 gabled house & they have added another gable. I found old Mr & Mrs Wm Lowther staying there. The garden is very pretty & there are lovely old trees all round it. The house is spick & span & there is every comfort—an excellent cook—& a natty parlour maid.
