25 June 1899 — Swinford Old Manor, Ashford, Kent
Sunday. 25th [June 1899]. I had long talks with Mrs Austin about books & old furniture & went round the house with her & then sat talking in the garden. We sat so long & so still that a wild squirrel took us for shrubs & came bounding onto Mrs Austin’s dress & would have run up onto her shoulder if she had had the presence of mind not to shrink away. The day was fine but not sunny. Mrs Lowther sketched all day & Mr Lowther sat reading to her. It is refreshing to see old people who might be & probably are worldly, so devoted to each other. Mrs Lowther also seems kindly & did not speak ill of any one. We sat out again after lunch & had 5 o’cl tea out of doors & then Mrs Austin & I took a walk by the road to the North Park Lodge & back to Swinford Old Manor. First we went to see the old Saxon mill but as the miller & his family were out we cd only walk round it & look into the mill pond.
