26 June 1899 — Swinford Old Manor, Ashford, Kent
Monday. 26th [June 1899]. Sir Alfred Lyall left for town directly after breakfast– I left at ¼ to 12 & the Poet’s brougham took me, my maid & luggage to Ashford Station. I went by train to Sandling Junction & the maid & luggage went back to town. I got to Sandling at 1 & was met by Alice Murray & walked with her to her little farm house close by & lunched with her, her 2 children, Annie Murray, & Mrs John Murray out in the garden. The house is a pretty old fashioned one. The farm yard is laid down with grass—the horse yard filled with flowers. I had to go to the station directly after lunch as I went to town by 2.18 train & accompanied Mr J. Murray who was also returning home. I walked home from Charing Cross station by 5 o’cl , had tea & went off in a hansom to 175 Cromwell Road to see Mrs Clay Ker Seymer whose husband died suddenly last week. I found her in a very curious state—heart broken but not having shed a tear. She told me how it had all happened & we talked it all over—but still she was unmoved—& said she did not want to cry & would manage to bear it somehow. How will it end. Poor Gertie. I am so sorry for her. She has 4 children but does not care for them & says she has not got the “maternal instinct.” I left her at 8 & came home to dinner.
