12 July 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 12th July [1899]. Still very hot day. Busy morning beginning with the chiropodist, then a dressmaker. Then Theresa Rassam daughter of Hormuzd Rassam Henry’s old friend. She is studying singing in hopes of taking it as a profession. I made her try to [illegible word]. She has a strong contralto without charm or style. I asked her to come this evening. Some flowers arrived from Canford wh I arranged & was very tired by lunch time. Nellie came in to lunch. We then rested. Had a visit from Mrs Bewes Charlie Wylde’s mother & his sister– At 4 I dressed & at 4.30 I took a hansom & went to Princess Louise’s party at Kensington Palace. All the world was there. The garden charming—music band Ch: Royal choir boys singing &c. I met Mr Sub Dean Sheppard & he took me into the Palace to see the Queen’s apartments wh are now repaired & shown to the public. The Queen’s toys were in her nursery. The rooms she was born in & her nursery are papered with monstrously ugly papers– The pictures of events in her reign are interesting. At the party I met Blanche Lady Lindsay & she offered me a lift home in her carriage. She took me to Hans Place & I was hurrying off to get a cab & go home when Lady Vivian who was in the Place gardens called me in to talk to her. I walked with her a bit & then returned home & dressed for dinner. Lady Agneta Montagu, B. Lady Lindsay, Dr & Mme Nevada Palmer, Señor Casals, Mr Charles Alderson, Miss Monk, my brother Merthyr, Sir Julian Salomans, Mr Charles Wylde & Mr & Mrs Allan Cole dined with me—& we sat down 14 to dinner. Afterwards, Constance came & she accompanied on the piano Casals on his cello– He played beautifully. Miss Rassam, Nela Du Cane, Olwen Ponsonby came & Louis Du Cane– All were delighted with Casals playing.
