20 July 1899 — Budleigh Salterton
Thursday. 20th [July 1899]. Breakfast at 9.30. Edgar came downstairs abt 12.30 & sat with me in the garden just outside the front door. The first time he has been outside the house since he was taken ill. He enjoyed it & we sat there for a couple of hours chatting. A Mr Rees came about 12 to visit and they asked him to stay luncheon which he did. He is an agreeable man of Welsh origin & is about to be married. He has a fine voice. Edgar lunched in his own study but afterwards wheeled himself into the drawg room. I offered to try to play the accompaniment on the piano if Mr Rees would sing—so we set to work & by degrees Edgar warmed up to the music & brought his chair close up to the piano & sang himself—by degrees his voice cleared & became strong & it was 4 oclock when the men came & carried him up to his room & he went to bed– Mr Rees took his leave directly after 5 o’cl tea & Jane & I sat talking till 6.30 when Leo wished me to go for a walk. We went down to the beach & watched for the mackerel shoals—as the fishing boats were all on the alert & men on the high ground also on the watch. At last as it was 7.30 we had to give it up & return home to dinner. We sat with Edgar & had our coffee with him. At 10 we retired. I packed my box ready for tomorrow’s start.
