19 July 1899 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 19th [July 1899]. I put off leaving till 1 o’cl train & at 10 went off to Hans Place to see how Lady V. is. I found she was better & had slept. One of her brothers was there so I left them happier & went home. Blanche looked in at 11.30 to say goodbye to me. I lunched at 12 & then went off under Jane’s care to the station & started by 1 o’cl train from Waterloo by myself for Budleigh Salterton to stay with the Edgar Layards. I arrived there at 5.30 & was met at the station by Leo. I found his father ever so much better than when I was last here in May. By the use of opiates Edgar is out of pain except at times. He was in bed when I arrived but had been down most of the day. After the heat of London the cool of the sea air was very grateful & we sat out after dinner in the garden by the moon light. A perfect calm so that there was not even the sound of the ripple of the waves. At 10 I went to bed quite tired out.
