25 July 1899 — Dowlais House, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan
Tuesday. 25th July [1899]. I packed before breakfast & taking leave of Ivor & Cornelia got into a fly & drove down to Merthyr Tydvil & took the 10.30 train via Cardiff & Bristol up to London. I got there at 4.30 & went straight home & had tea– Then dressed & at 7 I took a hansom & went to 44 Hans Place to see the Vivian girls. I found no better account of their mother—rather worse for her mind has not recovered its balance. After sitting with them & doing all I could to comfort them I went at 8 oclock on to 14 Grosvenor Crescent & dined with the Merthyr Guests. Nellie met me there and we were quite a small party only Merthyr, Theo & their girl. After dinner I had a long talk with Merthyr who is so pleased & happy at the termination of the Rhuvon affair, & grateful to me for the little help I have been able to give– I begged him as a favour to me in return to be nice & pleasant to Ivor & Cornelia & I think he will be so. He told me that he was not going to let me pay my share towards Rhuvon’s costs. We also talked over his money affairs with Monty & he seems inclined to try & get that also settled. We came home to bed at 11. I was quite tired—but almost too excited to sleep well.
