1 August 1899 — Plombières
Tuesday. 1st August [1899]. Dr Bottentruit came to see us this morng & gave us directions as to the mode of taking the cure. We have to take a bath at 10.30 & remain in it ½ hour at a temp: of 34 to 36. After that one returns to one’s room & gets into a warmed bed & remain there for ½ hour– Then dress & be ready for the day. Half an hour before lunch & dinner one drinks a ¼ of a glass of the water at the Source des Dames. The French baigneurs all lunch at 11—& the band on the promenade play from 12 to one—again at 4 & at 7. About 2 o’cl Lionel Guest arrived accompanied by Vere Ponsonby to spend a few days here. They came from Beyrouth where they have been hearing Wagner’s Operas– Nela & the 2 boys went to hear “Mignon” given at the Casino in the evening– Ivor & I played patience in the evening & went to bed at 10.
