5 September 1899 — Wengen
Tuesday. 5th September [1899]. I breakfasted in my room at 8 & then sat out on a balcony writing & talking to Kate. We had a dinner table d’hôte at 1. Very good & wholesome food. We pay 5fc50cs a day a head for board & lodging. We sat about working & reading till time to go to meet Monty Alderson at the station & then came back & had tea– The young ones started with Cecil for a walk—& abt ½ hour after Kate & I went. We met the others returning. There was a shower which afterwards settled down into rain & a heavy thunderstorm & we could not sit out after supper. I played patience in the entrance hall till bed. Knapp better but kept her bed. There seem to be some nice people staying in this Pension—a friendly German old gentleman & his wife. A German officer with a pretty sister who has her arm in a sling from the result of a fall out walking. I had a long talk with the German & began to find myself able to converse again in that language after my disuse.
