7 September 1899 — Wengen
Thursday. 7th [September 1899]. We went to the top of the little Sheideck pass. The young people went off on foot with Cecil starting early in the morning. Kate & I followed in the train & got there by abt 11.30. It was a splendid day quite cloudless. We took our luncheon with us in a parcel & sat outside the hotel in the shade. There were constant trains coming in & lots of people going about. After lunch the whole party excepting Kate & I walked off to the Eiger glacier. She & I intended to have taken the electric train wh we believed were every half hour. To our dismay we found none went for two hours so we resolved & try a walk. It was very hot & rather a steep path & I thought that Cecil would be annoyed & think us very foolhardy. We consulted some gentlemen we met & they encouraged us to go on so we toiled slowly onwards. We got there in abt 1½ after a long hot walk always uphill. I held the umbrella over Kate & helped her on her way & at last we reached the glacier where we rejoined our party & to our surprise they were delighted to see us & so were glad we had not waited for the trains. We went into the ice cave & walked about on the glacier & Mary photod us there. Then the party began to walk back to Sheideck. Kate & I intended to return at all events by the train & remained in the station—again we found we should have to wait so long that we had better walk so we set out & caught the others very soon. We did not stop in Sheideck but walked on to Wengen Alp & rested at the Wengern Alp-Hotel Jungfrau & had coffee sitting out & watching the avalanches which every now thundered down the mountain side. Unfortunately I had rubbed my heel & could not walk any further so Kate & I sat & watched the avalanches till the train came which took us back to Wengen abt 7. The rest of the party returned on foot. All were delighted with the expedition which has been a great success.
