26 September 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 26th [September 1899]. Monty & Reggie Alderson left here today by an early train for Verona on their way home. The Chaplain & his wife Mr & Mrs Christie came to luncheon with us. Afterwards I went out in gondola with Kate & Cecil. Coming home someone in a passing gondola screamed my name & looking round I saw Donna Laura Minghetti. We stopped our gondolas & rowed close to each other & then & there embraced from gondola to gondola to Kate’s great amusement—& promised to meet tomorrow. Then on the way home—we saw the Bentivoglio gondola & learnt the Los Marqueses had arrived so we left a message to beg Idita Bentivoglio to come & see Kate at once wh she did. The Belmondos came to dinner– The girls went out for their last row in the evening.
