27 September 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 27th [September 1899]. After a morning of packing we lunched at 12.30 & then all went to the station & I saw Cecil, Kate, Eda, Mary & Nela Du Cane off by 2 train for Milan. They were all very sorry to go & I to lose them—but their holiday was over & it had to be. I wanted to have kept Mary a month longer but Cecil would not allow it. When they were off I came home & sat quiet a bit. The house seemed large & empty & I felt very small. I looked into the empty guest rooms & then retreated to my own room & sat still a bit. However it was not long before Donna Laura appeared & I took her out to antiquity shops—returned at 5 to tea & sent for Iduna Belmondo & then we 3 went out again on the “chasse” for old things & came home quite late. Dined at 8 & went early to bed.
