6 October 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 6th October [1899]. We breakfasted in our rooms & Sophy arranged the flowers sent me by Css Pisani. Donna Laura Minghetti, Countess de Bülow & Senatore Blaserna came to luncheon with us at 1 o’cl & then left at 2 & at ¼ to 4 Sophy, May & I followed them & took them out with us. They are staying at the Hotel Britannia. We went first to Trapolin’s work shop to see them making the cut velvets & brocatelles. There are about a dozen looms at work by hand. Thence we went on board the Duchess of Mazzarino’s yacht. She is a charming old lady very lively & has been very handsome. She had her son Count Mazzolino on board & his wife & children. The Countess born Ruffo Bagnara—quiet, young & pretty & pleasant. They gave us tea in the Saloon wh is very beautifully arranged but it was very hot owing to the heavy scirocco. The Dss Ruffo Bognara mêre was there a handsome woman—sister to my friend the Dss della Grazia. They were all very kind & polite & promise to come to see me tomorrow. Admiral Canevaro & Ersilia were also there. On leaving the yacht we went to see the Montalba family– It was past 5 & they expected us at 3. However they were kind eno’ not to mind & were delighted to make Donna Laura’s acquaintance. She was delighted to see Clara’s pictures & so the pleasure was mutual. We took Donna Laura, Count von Bülow & Senatore Blaserna back to their hotel & took leave of them. They leave Venice on Sunday & we are not to see them tomorrow. It began to rain heavily & we hurried home– It was past 6 when got indoors. Dined at 8.
