9 October 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 9th [October 1899]. Sophy lunched out with the Curtis. May & I started off directly after luncheon & picked up Sophy & took her on to the Lido. There was a storm of wind last night which has cleared off the heavy scirocco & great heat & today it was fresh & bright. We went to the Quattro Fontane—sat on the sands & walked & made our tea & came back at sunset. On the return it was quite cold. Dined at 8 & had my evening reception. Isabel Somerset came & Mr Saunders. Dr Sacchi says there is nothing the matter with the maid & she leaves Venice on Wedy. Isabel leaves tomorrow. The Curtis came & the Montalbas & Mme Noce & her son Teddie Moore, & Signor Manati & Mr R. Cozzi & Mr & Mrs Christie. We had tea & they stayed till abt 11.30 when we went to bed. We are anxious for news about the Transvaal, whether there will be war or not.
