15 October 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 15th [October 1899]. Did not go out all day. Carry Eden came to see me & have a little gossip. The Duke of Northumberland & his two daughters Lady May & Lady Victoria came to tea & to see the pictures which they seemed to understand & like. The Duke is a curious looking man with a long pale face with long red whiskers– He has a quiet nervous manner. The girls are sweet quiet looking girls the younger one pretty & with a delicate complexion. Today I took out my guitar & tried to play it after so many years that it has lain by & I had not the heart to play. It is the lovely old ebony & ivory guitar Henry bought for me once at Lausanne.
