23 October 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 23rd [October 1899]. We had a delightful day at the Lido where we were invited to lunch with the famiglia Montalba at the cabin they have hired on the beach at Quattro Fontane. It was a beautiful day—sun shining—but a little hazy a perfect autumn day. Mr Montalba met us at the steps of the little canal where we landed on the Lido. He was dressed in white flannels & looked quite the country man—he led us to the cabin where we found his 3 sisters & a dainty table laid out under shelter on the little platform in front of the cabin. A capital lunch cooked by the sisters was quickly served & we did full justice to it. Afterwards we wandered by the shore & went to a market garden close by to get flowers. We got some chrysanthemums. Then at 4 we started home & at ¼ to 5 I got to Palazzo Rezzonico where I had promised to take tea– Sophy & May went to Mrs Denisons. There were abt 20 people at the Rezzonico & Miss Browning & Mr Browning were there. Fannie had arranged the little party to show her delight at having her husband with her—tho’ he only comes down here now & then for a short time. He says he is modelling a statue at Asolo & cannot leave the wet clay for long lest the statue should suffer. This one can understand. This evening we had to dinner Mr & Mrs Browning & Miss Sarianna Browning, & their friend Miss Louise Broadwood & also Clara Montalba– Miss B who is over 86 was as bright & lively as any of us. There was an illumination of the Piazza tonight in honor of the K & Q & the Brownings left early after dinner & took May with them to see the illuminations. Old Miss B went with them they intending to leave her at their house– But when May came in she said the old lady insisted upon seeing everything & remained out as long as the rest of the party & enjoyed it.
