22 October 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 22nd [October 1899]. We all three went to morning service at 10.30 & then home. Ct & Css Brandolin came to lunch with us at 1—glad to do so the more as they have not brought their cook with them. They are very pleasant kind good people. He is quite the type of the condottiere of the 15th cento with his red hair & moustache firmly curled upwards. She is clever but plain & with a piercing unmusical voice wh is fatiguing after a long talk. We are fond of each other. She is a true friend & a good woman. We went to church in the afternoon at 3.30 & met all the procession of [illegible word] in their fantastic dresses going to the Municipio to escort the municipal authorities to meet the K & Queen. One boat was got up in Egyptian style—with yellow & red costumes—one all pink—one all white—one blue & one green. The effect was good as a whole. I came in to receive Clara Montalba & Miss Pearl the novelist who came to tea & to see the arrival of the “Sovrani”– Sophy & May took a little further turn in the gondola before they joined me. Abt 5.30 the K & Q came & the procession was a very pretty sight. I had all my window hangings put out wh make a fine effect. They are what I made in Spain in coloured cloths & with arms in the centre. I copied them from some splendid old Spanish “colgaduras” in coloured velvets lent me by the Oñate family. Sophy went out after the procession had passed, to see Mrs [illegible word] & only returned just in time for dinner. We retired to our bed rooms at 10 & Sophy came there & we talked till 12.30. Miss Pearl is a nice looking lady with pretty white hair & gentle manner of abt 40. We had news today of the battle fought at Glencoe in the Transvaal in which we were victorious & took the enemy’s guns but, I fear with heavy losses & Genl Symons mortally wounded wh spoils our victory.
