25 October 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 25th [October 1899]. Sophy went off to Vescovana & will not return till tomorrow night. She left directly after breakfast. At 9.30 the King & Queen of Italy passed down on their way to the station. They were in an open gondola accompanied by gondolas full of authorities civil & military and by the coloured bissone. The effect was a good deal spoilt by a slight fog which persisted till the afternoon when it became lovely. I took May after luncheon to the Eden’s garden & we walked about there—but the padroni were absent. Fannie Browning came to tea at 5 & Mr Montalba came.
