28 October 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 28th [October 1899]. Sophy lunched with the Curtis & May & I went on foot to fetch her there directly after our lunch & carried her off to St Mark’s where we found Sr Saccardo waiting for us with his assistant also a party of ladies, Miss Teesdale & her friend Miss Bell, Miss Pearl & 2 of her friends & the Christies & their friends. I was suffering with headache & could hardly look at the things which are magnificent. Saccardo showed them with the greatest triumph & delight & especially the little chapel containing all the relics of which there are a goodly number & wondrous– The vessels that held them were the most wonderful part of it—some being of exquisite workmanship of the best times– One could not help blessing the old bones for the part they had played in being the means of preserving such beautiful works. Saccardo has arranged the relics beautifully in glass cupboards round the little oratory & had introduced small electric lamps with the glass thus enabling one to see them perfectly. When the party moved into the church I & May made our escape & I went to my room to rest. Sophy remained till 5 oclock. I had a visit from Sir William & Lady Thistleton Dyer. He is head of Kew gardens & she is the daughter of Sir Joseph Hooker who was such a great friend of Henry’s & whom we constantly used to meet at Aldermaston when Mrs Higford Burr had such pleasant parties.
