1 November 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 1st November [1899]. I left Venice for Stanghella by 9.50 train & took with me Sir Wm & Lady Thistleton Dyer & Clara Montalba to pay a visit to Countess Pisani at Vescovana. We arrived there at 11.30 & got just in time for luncheon. The Countess & Dyers made friends at once. Clara was struck with the ease & dignity of our hostess & said she reminded her of the descriptions of the great French ladies who before the Revolution kept their salons. The Countess always dresses beautifully—is tall & erect & has hardly any white hairs. Unfortunately she is now much crippled from rheumatism– Walks with aid of a stick & has to be helped when she rises from her chair. After lunch I took the Dyers & Clara a little run round the garden– The “moonflower” was still out (ipomea mexicana) & Sir Wm spotted it at once. Then we returned to the salon for coffee & a chat with the Countess– After that we drove out to see the farms & cattle. Our hostess did not accompany us. It being All Saints fête day we saw nothing going on on the farms. Returned to Vescovana for 5 o’cl tea & then sat chatting till dinner at 7. Retired to our rooms at 9.30.
