22 November 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 22nd [November 1899]. I received a nice letter from Princess Charlotte of Saxe Meiningen written from the bedside of the Empress who she said was warmly wrapped up in the little shawl I gave her, to thank me for my letter to her on her birthday. I wrote letters all the morning & never got done in time to get to typing. After lunch I walked to Piazza & had the gondola to meet me & bring me home. I bought Postal cards with reproductions of 2 of my pictures in a shop in the Piazza & I went to make a complaint at the Alinari the photographer to ask if they know about it as it is a contravention to the law, my permission never having been asked. I got home at 4.30 & practised my guitar till tea. Count Rucellai came to call & we had a long talk about his mother in law Mrs Bronson who is very ill at Florence having had a stroke but who seems not to better. After dinner I played the harmonium—the first time since I was left alone that I cared to do so—tonight I was impelled to do so—I know not why.
