30 November 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 30th [November 1899]. Today I dined [at] the Edens to meet Mr Williamson a great friend of theirs who has settled at Venice within the last 4 or 5 years. He is the son of a rich man in Perthshire. When quite a boy at college he ’verted to the R.C.’s & became a priest. He has now had scruples & given up the priesthood & retired here. When he verted he broke with his father but has now been reconciled to him. I believe he was a splendid preacher at the Oratory in London & had great success there– His mother is a daughter of Ld Tredegar & he himself has the regular Welsh type of face but is rather good looking. He is shy feeling his position as an ere while priest is rather a false one—but so far he remains an R.C.
