17 December 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 17th [December 1899]. The war news, also confirmed, & household worries kept me awake half the night & I am very low today. I went to morning service & took Iduna with me & I walked after service with Carry Eden as far as her house discussing about Fannie Browning & what she had best do. I then went on to the Piazza & walked with Mrs Hulton whom I met. From there I walked home by the Rialto & on to Pal. Rezzonico to try & see Fannie but she was out so I walked home again to lunch. Painted till 3.15 when I went to afternoon service. Then to see Fannie & offered she should come to stay in this house the rest of the winter– I saw her maid who was ill in bed– Home to tea in my own room—overwhelmed by the thoughts of the war & Buller’s defeat. I cannot get over it—poor old England! Fannie Browning & Iduna Belmondo came to dine with me—& left early. It is awful—this war news what will come of it. I sat down & had a good cry—tho’ I know that is no good–
