16 December 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 16th [December 1899]. It was so dull & rainy this morning that I did not go to Ellen Montalba to sit for my portrait but copied the small Carpaccio picture for my Catalogue. The Curtis came to lunch with me at 1 o’cl. We were sitting talking when to our surprise abt 3 o’cl in walked Fannie Browning! Her maid who is at Pal: Rezzonico being ill she came down to look after her– After the Curtis departed Fannie & I sat & talked & she told me all about the difficulties of her life at Asolo with her husband & how uncomfortable he was making her. We went together in gondola to the Edens where I left her. Mr Montalba was there & I walked with him to the Piazza & returned home in gondola to 5 o’cl tea– The “Dipesa” wh came at 7 gave the terrible news of Sir Redvers Bullers defeat in the Transvaal. It is quite awful—8 or 10 cannons taken a regular battle lost. Poor England we are fallen low—the 3rd defeat in a month– Henry was too right when he said the country had begun to go down from the time of Gladstone’s last Govt.
