6 January 1900 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Saturday. 6th January [1900]. Early tea in my bedroom at 8.30. Dressed, wrote letters—lunch with the Countess at 12– Still foggy & rainy & no going out. I sent Knapp off to Venice with my luggage by 1.30 train. Sat talking & reading to the Countess all the afternoon & working for Transvaal War. D. Antonio joined us at tea at 4.30– We dined all three together at 6.30 & then I left Vescovana & drove to Stanghella to leave for Venice by the 8.40. When I got to the station the Capo stazione informed me that the train was 50 minutes late on acct of some damage to the line between Rome & Florence. He very politely asked me to sit in his office wh I did & crocheted a Tam o Shanter cap I was making for the soldiers at War & that & talking of the War with the Signor Capo whiled away the time. I got to Venice near 12 instead of 11– Fannie Browning waited up for me & I had tea & talked to her and then went to bed.
