7 January 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 7th [January 1900]. I hired a gondola & Fannie & I went to the 10.30 service. Mr Christie has gone for a holiday & a Mr Douglas is his locum tenens. He preached well & sang well– Mme Wiel played the organ & the service was nice. I lunched at home with Fannie & then we went to 3.30 service at which there were but ourselves present. Then I went to see the Canevaros & found Count Canevaro convalescent & not looking as ill as I had expected seeing he has been seriously ill nearly 3 months. Ersilia was still very depressed & nervous as the Drs had frightened her about her husband. I returned home to tea & had visits from Mr Hulton, Ellen & Hilda Montalba & Iduna Bel: At 7 Fannie & I went off to dine with the Edens & came home at 10 & went to bed. It rained a good deal on & off all day but there was a ray of sun, the first we have seen this fortnight past & I felt it as a happy omen that the first ray of sunshine I have seen this year fell on the Cup at the end of the Communion service. I recd a letter today from my dear Empress—giving an indifferent account of her health—but full of hope for the Transvaal War & of patriotic utterances– She is a fine English woman to her heart’s care. It is delightful reading her letters.
