9 January 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 9th [January 1900]. Wrote letters, packed & prepared for the start for England. We lunched Fannie & I at 12 & then went to the station. Mrs Eden & the Belmondos were there to see me off. I left for Milan by 2 P.M. train & Fannie went to Asolo by 2.20 train. I had a comfortable journey. There was a nice friendly Austrian lady in the carriage with me. Seeing me working a cap wh I finished on the way she asked me what I was doing & on hearing it was for the Army in the Transvaal she asked me how long I thought the War would last & tho’ too polite to say anything evidently she did not sympathize with us in the matter. I got to Milan at 7.30 & went to the Hotel du Nord near the station. There was a dense fog at Milan as seems usually the case there in winter. Tea in my room & early to bed.
