Sunday. 21st [January 1900]. I went to the German Ch. R. service at 10 & then did not move out any more today. Sir Henry Thompson came to tea. He has grown somewhat feeble & slow of hearing & what shows me that he is aged—he said he cannot understand how it is so many men offer themselves for service in the War knowing the certainty that they will lose their lives. Surely the generosity & enthusiasm of youth has died down from his blood. Elaine dined with Nelly & me– | |
