25 January 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 25th [January 1900]. Miss Faithful came to see me & I got Miss Wylde to come & meet her about going as nurse if our scheme is carried out. Miss F begged to speak with me in private & then said that tho’ Mrs Dring had been led to believe that the Govt was going to accept her plan—a letter from a Col. Malet Secy of the Soldiers & Sailors Help Society has come refusing the offer. Mrs D. says it is the result of what Col. Malet has been told by a Mrs Gardner who has a mad dislike to Mrs Dring & vows she will thwart every scheme of hers. This must be cleared up. Is there something against Mrs D. I went off to see Adeline Bedford & consult & agreed that something more must be found out about it before we go on—but for the moment there is a stop to it. I went on to Mrs Rates to a lunch given to meet Miss Cholmondeley the Authoress of a new novel called “Red Pottage.” I got there a little late & found a large party at lunch—amongst them Mr Sydney Colvin & Mr F. Leveson Gower. Miss C. is no longer very young. Is tall & slight & has a pleasant face. I stayed on talking to Mrs Rate after the rest had gone & I only got home at 5. Nelly left for Northamptonshire to hunt at Mr & Mrs Cazenove’s. I dined alone & went early to bed.
