8 February 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 8th February [1900]. Hard frost & bitter cold. Typed copies of letters Addie gave me last evening & forwarded them to Dr Hyslop. Walked out with Nellie after lunch & we parted company & I walked off to call on Maria. In Cav. Sqr I met Daisy & Issie who said their mother was gone out so I turned back with them & came home. They told me there was a letter in the Times of today (I had over looked) from a gentleman saying he wanted to send his wounded son to Madeira so I found it & sent it on to Dr Hyslop. I went to dine with Mrs Green at 14 Kensington Sqr. Met Sir E. & Lady Poynter, Col. & Mrs Jekyll, Sir Arthur & Lady Godley, Mr & Mrs Sydney Holland. Col. J. took me to dinner & I had Sir Arthur on my left. Had rather a pleasant evening specially as I talked to Lady Poynter a good deal. Col. J. tells me the feeling in France against England is very bitter & even an Englishman walking on the boulevards is likely to hear unpleasant things. He is Commissioner for the Paris Exn. He says the whole of the French officials are unpleasant people to deal with– There are far too many of them—underpaid & never gentlemen. He spoke of the War & said no European army would or could have done much better than we have done in the Transvaal & it requires a special & new knowledge.
