9 February 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 9th [February 1900]. Quiet morning. Practised my new Hammond typer. Nellie went off after lunch to help her cousin Lady Gwendolin Cecil who is sending out provisions of soap, towels &c to the Cape hospitals. She put a letter in the papers today asking for money & today has already £400! & is despatching the things tomorrow. Nela came to see me at 3 & we walked out together. Called on Mrs Borwick whom we found at home—but leaving town & very excited– She is ordered to retire in the country for quiet—& is evidently in a queer state of nerves. Came in to tea at 5. Connie came for a short time—very affairée as she generally is. I fell to reading Bullen’s fascinating book Log of a Sea waif—& nearly made myself late for dinner by forgetting to dress– However I hurried on & at 8 Nellie & I started. I dropped her at 17 Cav. Sqr to dine with Duncannons & went on to 25 Park Crescent & dined with the Du Canes– Richard & his daughters Nela & Issie & son Louis—also Mr Wm Welby & his daughter Lisa. I had not seen Mr Welby since we were young & it is curious to find him after so many years—& the same in figure & face—only wizen dried up—hardened & set & with white hair. I daresay he makes the same reflections on me. After dinner I sat with Maria in her sitting room next the drawing room & chatted till 10 when she was fetched by her maid & went to bed. She is very feeble but says she is better than she has been—& can walk stronger. At 10.30 I went off in a cab to Cav. Sqr to join Nellie who dined there & after abt ½ hour we came home to bed. It was a cold night. On my return I found a telegram from Dr Hyslop saying he had the cable message from Madeira that the Commission has arranged with Reid’s Hotel & Mr Muchado for the Hospital–
