10 February 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 10th February [1900]. The early post brought me a letter from Dr Hyslop saying he would come & see me at 11.30. Arthur Du Cane came to see me & was with me when Dr H arrived & we discussed matters of Madeira together. I informed Dr H. that I was going to resign my place on the Committee & he said he would do the same as now the whole thing must to put under the D. of Abercorn. We agreed to go together to try & see the Duke & we walked to Green St at once—but did not find him. We were referred to his Secy Mr Broderick at 18 Eaton Sqr so we went there in a hansom. Same result. He was away—so we gave it up pro tem, & I went to see Adeline Bedford & had a few words with her. She was just leaving town for two days– Then I hurried home to receive M. de Soveral, the Portuguese Minister who came to tell me that his govt have arranged & devised a plan by wh all our hospital necessaries will be allowed into Madeira without paying any duty. After lunch I sallied forth again to Hampden House to try again to see the Duke & not finding him left a note asking him to see me today. Went on to call on Lady Poynter to ask her for a letter to her Madeira friend that I might go & call on her. Lady Poynter was out so I left a message & came home. Two Nellie’s friends M. de la Terriere & Mr Archie Smith came to tea– Then came my sister Blanche—saying she could not stay long as it was snowing so hard! Arthur Du Cane came & I got him to help me to arrange all the Madeira Committee papers which Dr Hyslop had given over to me– He dined with me & we completed the job before he left. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground tonight & it is very cold.
