20 February 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 20th [February 1900]. I drove off in a hansom to Kensington Square with Nellie to call on Miss Faithfull at the Ladies College as she wanted some fresh information as to her sister’s position at Madeira. I explained that a new Committee had been formed & she seemed satisfied. I then went to Nellie’s shop close by to see where she & Mrs Arthur Layard have set up dressmaking. It is very small but clean. They have also got a French woman to work for them. I then returned home for luncheon & Nellie soon followed. After lunch Mrs Cazenove called & we were sitting talking when the footman came to say Mrs Gardener was below & wished to see me. As I knew she had come to denounce Mrs Dring to me & I did not wish to be dragged into a quarrel I declined seeing her but as she would not go away Nellie saw her. It appears she said she wanted to speak abt the private character of a “certain person”—& Nellie answered that as the Madeira scheme was public business we did not occupy ourselves with private affairs & so got rid of her. At 3 Kate & I went on foot to Park Crescent to call on Maria. She was out but we saw Daisy & Nela & they walked part of the way back here with us. Kate went to 5 tea with Molly Humphrey & I went home to tea. Connie came. Kate & I dined with the Duncannons.
