2 March 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 2nd [March 1900]. Wrote letters & typed. Very cold & wet day. Did not go out till 6 o’cl when I took a cab & went to 25 Park Crescent & sat an hour with Maria. She talked the whole time about the War which absorbs all her thoughts. The excitement about Ladysmith is calmed down today especially as the list of casualties is beginning to come out. Lady Gregory came & dined with me. She tells me our dear old friend Sir Frederick Burton is dying—gangrene in his foot having set in. Nelly left for Northamptonshire to hunt.
